Welcome to the PIPES Program

Important notice: The PIPES-program will be currently reorganized.

PIPES (Postgraduate International Process Engineering School) is an international and national postgraduate study program at the Technical University of Berlin (Technische Universität Berlin TU Berlin) for graduates from Process Engineering, Energy Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Process and Plant Technology, Biotechnology, Safety Engineering, Control Engineering and related disciplines.

The PIPES Program is housed in the Faculty of Process Science and Engineering (Faculty III) and demonstrates a complete and significant reform of graduate studies at the Technical University of Berlin and offers an outstanding education due to the high level of scientific and technical know-how of teachers with wide experience in research institutions and industry.

Since the year 2001 international postgraduate study programs have been initiated, financed and supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst DAAD) and the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG) within the frame program “Promotion an Hochschulen in Deutschland†(PHD).

The Federal Ministry for Education and Research has provided for the years 2001 - 2003 approximately 12 million Euro for the participating universities with centers of scientific excellence.

The PIPES Program was introduced at the Technical University of Berlin in the summer 2002 as a result of growing recognition that a typical German Ph.D. study course, leading to the academic degree “Dr.-Ing.â€, lasts too long compared with the international standard.

For this reason, the main aim of the program is to ensure that the course of study is limited to three years. This is accomplished by providing high-quality, motivated national and international students with intensive tutoring, assistance, regular meetings with supervisors and clearly defined targets.

Moreover the PIPES Program seeks to make a dissertation at a German university more attractive and competitive through close and interdisciplinary cooperation, guaranteed both by a worldwide network of leading international universities, and through transparent study structures. It provides close and international cooperation among scientists in Berlin, the largest German city, and one of the liveliest, most interesting and rapidly evolving capitals in the world.

The internationalization of doctoral study courses is also promoted through the admission of students with international degrees and an adequate offer of courses taught in English.

The PIPES Program offers the German academic degree “Dr.-Ing.†in the field of Process Systems Engineering. The option of conferring the alternative academic degree “Ph.D.†is currently under consideration by a Faculty committee.

This program is aimed at graduates with a Diploma or Master’s degree and will take about three years. Candidates of the PIPES Program are primarily expected to successfully complete a research thesis and, if necessary, take also some courses.

Applicants will need a working knowledge of either German or English. The academic working language is English.
